And I refuse to be "civil" with asses in a virtual community. If somebody rapes your daughter do you try to be "civil"?? Civil, civil, civil, is mainly an escape clause for those whom are afraid to suffer VALUES.

That does not seem to be possible.<< ManyMoose - I have undoubtedly spent less time participating in the political threads here than you have, though I, too, have been on SI for more than ten years. I can only base my opinions on my own experience, but I respect your opinion and the fact that it's based on your experience. I agree that to ban someone from a subject simply because they disagree with the prevailing consensus is stupid and intolerant. When I jumped in to voice my opinion on this topic, I was actually more concerned about what I took to be a generalization about conservatives vs. liberals than about what happens on SI. I'm not sure SI's population is a representational sample of the nation at large. To me, open-mindedness means not just tolerating another person's viewpoint, but actually trying to understand it and even being willing to be persuaded to change one's own viewpoint. That kind of open-mindedness is uncommon, I would say. Most political discussions, on SI and elsewhere, tend to be about proving the opposing viewpoint is wrong. - Allen
