>>You waxed wisely on the accusation of "situational ethics" being levied by conservatives--while you (being a LIBERAL) accused conservatives of "situational ethics". Don't you get it?? You said it was a phrase that "conservatives use to denigrate liberals". But you are a Liberal using it to denigrate Conservatives.<<

Solon -

Oh, I see the source of this misunderstanding. You thought that I was trying to denigrate conservatives by using that phrase. In fact, that wasn't my intention. I was trying to show that conservatives who use that phrase to denigrate liberals are being hypocritical, since they themselves do apply different standards of ethics in different situations. See?

I did say, "Ethical issues are not always black and white, and situations do have to be considered." in the post to which you first responded, which should have been a clue to any careful reader that I did not intend to imply what you thought I did. Maybe you just missed that part.

Now, I will say that I think the particular ways in which conservatives have been applying situational ethics lately are wrong. I don't think it's OK to detain U.S. citizens while denying them their constitutional rights to due process. I don't think it's OK to torture prisoners even if they are suspected terrorists. I don't think it's OK to eavesdrop on phone calls without any kind of warrant or judicial oversight. And I don't think the Executive branch of government should be considered to be above the law and the constitution just because we are "at war."

There's something for you to chew on.
