It doesn't seem to be the way that IB use the term - the total for the account is what you say and makes perfect sense but then the total is split between "securities" and "commodities". The amount under commodities when I opened the first position was not the initial margin but some number between the initial and maintenance margin. Then going forward it fluctuates with the profit or loss in the positions. Just wondering how they compute that number. And the equity isn't my net profit on the trades. I would have thought the "commodities" NLV would be the initial margin + or - the net profit.
