Republican military expert weighs White House bid

Washington - Duncan Hunter, a conservative US lawmaker who chairs a powerful panel in charge of military spending, announced Monday that he is exploring a run for the presidency in 2008.

Hunter, a member of the centre-right Republican Party from San Diego, California, has backed President George W Bush on the war in Iraq and championed plans for a 1,100-kilometre fence along the US- Mexican border to deter illegal immigrants.

Hunter, 58, heads the Armed Services Committee in the lower House of Representatives, giving him power over more than 500 billion dollars in annual US military spending.

'As I finish my final two years as chairman of the Armed Services Committee and serve you, I'm also going to be preparing to run for president of the United States in 2008,' Hunter told supporters at a rally in San Diego.
