There is also the question of cost. Last I saw the cost to manufacture an automobile fuel cell was >$100,000. The infrastructure cost to make either ng or hydrogen readily available would also be enormous.

We can dance around with all these alternative fuel proposals as hypotheticals, but for the next 20 years the only realistic answers are conservation and greater conventional fuel efficiency. The markets will take care of that given time, but probably not without a crisis.

That's some big engine ! Wow.

I think we are close to apples to apples. I think there's a little warm up with fuel cells from waste heat, and some power used by the electronic control system, but we should be close.

I think you're right - Fuel cells are very picky. Gases like Hydrogen and NG seem to be easier to purify than liquids.

Sulfur also seems to be a lubricant for diesel operation, and I have read that running low sulphur diesel results in slightly higher wear on the engine.

JQPublic knows a lot about the auto industry, it would be good to get his view if he's around.
