>> You can't be surprised when a President plays politics, since that is who they are.

I am not surprised that any politician plays politics. But the fact remains that since that is not the job they are hired for, the politics should be the side show to the running of the country rather than the other way around.

>> demonizing the entire opposition party in wartime seems very divisive to me.

There are those who believe a major consideration in going to war was propping up the GOP and the president's political agenda. I find that argument plausible and if true, the actions of the administration are treasonous.

>> I am hopeful that's the last we will hear of it for some time.

I am hopeful that many structural flaws will be fixed so it cannot happen again...or at least these guys are made an example of so that the next time someone dreams of "permanent majority" (and by extension being beyond reproach) they will remember that nothing is permanent and eventually everyone will have to pay the piper.

I heard on CSPAN (but have not seen the actual news) that the congress passed a bill authorizing Bush to do whatever it takes to secure Iraq (in the context of war on terror). The article claimed the context of the bill was such that if Bush for example felt that Syria or Iran were a material threat to US position in Iraq, then Bush could just wage war and order attacks on those countries without approval from the Congress. The date of the bill, if I recall correctly, was October 2nd.

Has anyone heard of this?
