The folks from more strictly religious background ...the ones clamoring for a strong government role in marriage.

Marriage is not a religious institution. It is strictly a legal (government) institution.

Proof:
If you marry in a Jewish temple, Baptist church, Moslem mosque, Catholic Church or any other place that marriage is still considered valid when you change your religion.

Have you ever heard of a married couple having to remarry in a new church when they change faiths? If their marriage was a religious institution, then they would have to be married within that faith - or remarried within that new faith.

However, when you change religions (eg. Catholic changing to Baptist) then you have to be rebaptized.

Conclusion: Marriage is a government institution. Therefore it is governed by man's and government's laws.
