Alan-

There are J&R and B&H in NYC and every time I have been there the Apple section has been pretty busy. Otherwise, I cannot think of any others besides Best Buy and Circuit City. I have not been to either of them- I don't even know if they have any set up in the NYC area- so I don't know how good they are promoting Apple. I seem to remember reading on this thread that they are not.

The Apple Stores, on the other hand, are packed almost every time I have been in one recently- especially the new 5th. Avenue store in NYC. Wow, what a stunning store! It took me 15 minutes of walking around to find a Mac open to work on for a few minutes. If it is the Apple Stores he was referring to, then I think that he misstated whatever it was that he was trying to get across.

Jeff

Beyond CompUSA, there's no one that really pushes the Apple brand [besides] Apple," Munster says. Apple's own specialist stores, he says, are "like converted Burger Kings. They've very eclectic, but no one goes in to them."

My interpretation: Only CompuUSA and Apple [retail stores] push the Apple brand, not their "Apple Specialist Stores".

>>I was confused about that statement as well. Perhaps he didn't mean Apple Stores but meant the "store within a store" as you would find at CompUSA. I have been in CompUSA many times when there was practically no one in the Apple section.<<

Jef -

I thought that was what he might have meant, too, but he specifically says that CompUSA is the only place that does a good job pushing Apple product (which I agree with you is not really so).

What other "Apple specialist stores" are there?

- Allen

If I recall correctly, there were "Apple resellers" and a subset of blessed "Apple Specialist" stores, which had specific sales volumes and repair certification. This is NOT Apple's own retail stores nor store-within-a-store CompUSA. What remains of this may be found at applespecialist.com or apple.com (do an advanced search, By Solution: first item below All). At one point in time, there were quite a number of standalone Apple resellers, but volumes were insufficient to keep most of them going. I'd bet there are a handful that survived the last decade, though it would be difficult to objectively have criteria establish such a claim. Some of these folks sued (or are still suing?) Apple along the way for unfair competition. Other just made do with whatever they could sell, sometimes Apples, sometimes other things.
