I don't like the idea all that much, but instead of a signature we could require a thumb print on all ballots. It would be used for checking duplicates, and for ensuring that the voter was alive. It seems a fairly simple concept that could be adapted to machine, mail-in, punch cards, optical readers, and so forth.

I had to give an invisible finger print when I opened my checking account, and suffered no ill effects from it.
