Kerry tried to say later he was talking about the president, which doesn't make much sense. Maybe "I meant to say something about the president" would make sense, but if he misspoke, if his words didn't come out right, than he should have just said so an apologized. It would not have totally ended the controversy, the most partisan on the right would still try to make something of it, but it would have greatly weakened the controversy and I wouldn't have made anything of it. Instead he makes an explanation that doesn't really make sense and then goes on the attack.
