To get a statistically meaningful reduction in Hba1c levels vs placebo (metformin) for the group sizes in the trial and wide spread of the initial Hba1c levels one needed a miracle drug.

I strongly disagree. All they needed was an efficacious drug, not a miracle drug.

Your assertion is even contradicted by the company’s own comments when they increased the patient size midstream.

p.s. Patients in the insulin arms received metformin too.
