Well, his actual words were that it was a "botched joke." Sounds like a misstatement to me.

"Botched joke" yes. Its obviously botched, because it opened him to the negative reaction that he's getting. But he is still arguing that he didn't make the implication that he did in fact make. His defense is more that people are wrong about his statement, not that his statement was wrong and should have been worded differently.

Not a huge deal, esp. if he isn't the next Democratic candidate for president (and I doubt he will be) but not a mere pointless distraction either.
