I have to hope Kerry wasn't saying what was on his mind. But even if you DO think the military is full of morons you should never say it (at least if you are contemplating ever running for anything). And if you DO insult the military, you quickly say "I'm sorry"- again, if you even imagine you are running for something.

I think people like you and I, not in politics, can be careless about what we say, but Kerry should know better. It's true that this is silly, and what passes for debate, but we all KNOW that, so to be inept at dealing with it shows a profound weakness in Kerry- both his ability to understand how what he has said will play, and will be used, and his ability to use his own mistakes to his advantage. This would have been a great opportunity for Kerry to show he could make fun of himself, graciously apologize, and look like a human being. Unfortunately (for him) he didn't take the opportunity, probably because he is simply unable to.

Every mistake is also an opportunity to show people how you recover from mistakes (although a little of that goes a long way :-)
