In my experience, AS was painting with way too broad of a brush. Some of both Vietnamese and Cubans fit his model, but many do not. For example, when I was working for Tampa Coca Cola, the Cuban mechanics didn't strike me as coming from well off families.

It should also be noted that not all Cubans were able to hit the US with both feet running. My friend's family was upper middle class in Cuba; however when his parents came to the US [my friend hadn't been born yet], they didn't have job skills that translated well in the US. His father who had been a gov't official in Cuba became a baker here in the States. That was in PA......soon they migrated to CA where his father ended up owning two bakeries. By the time, the kids came along they were middle class and by the time, my friend was in college they were upper class. Throughout it all, my friend's parents were staunch Republicans.
