It's a mixed bag for private hired guns. They don't get Humvees and .50 calibers on top, air strikes and artillery on demand, the best recent intel on the bad guys, etc. Usually they are a few guys in a light armored vehicle, flak jackets, and a few automatic weapons. If they are lucky they get to move in groups instead of isolated targets, oops, I mean vehicles.

Regular US troops are a bigger target but much better able to defend themselves. Most private guns never expect to get shot at directly, much less have to take on bad guys in a protracted firefight.

No upside being a merc if you don't live to cash the paycheck.
