This isn't about being upstanding, really, I used that in it's PR sense, since the Reps gave the Dems a nice change to stand up and say "We love the military" - it's about appearing to be upstanding (and that goes for dems and reps). None of the representatives care enough to send their own kids to Iraq, for the most part. Bush's girls aren't there, and how many members of congress who voted for the war are actually willing to see their children and grandchildren go? Not many, I bet.

For both sides this is about appearing to be upstanding.

I was only addressing it as a PR situation, and I think it's probably a boon for the Dems, in the two ways I mentioned. But real upstanding characters in our two political parties? Few and far between. I'd start my list with the Dems and Reps that voted against the war, and I might end there too.
