"Massive government subsidies don't make something more economical, they just mean that someone else (tax payers) are paying the price." It depends. Solar is at the chicken and egg stage. The price is high because the market is small. The market is small because the price is high. So it stays in specialty niches. While one could hope that a company would gamble by setting up for volume manufacturing and then introduce low cost devices, it almost certainly won't happen that way.
