(You think that having Uncle Sucker around to do their work for them doesn't reduce the 'respect' Shiites supposedly have for the US? :-)

I think the Shites who have set up a government and cooperated with the US will have less respect for the US if we abandoned them. I think the Shites who have opposed the US will have less respect for the US if it seems or at least is claimed that their opposition (probably more the Sunni than Shia, but each side will claim the victory for themselves) "defeated" us.

Re: "Sure it will "hot up", but that doesn't mean that the radicals won't think they have had a victory,"

You believe they will still think that after another million or so are killed in a reprise of the decade-long Iran/Iraq War?

1 - I don't think there will be another million or so killed, or another decade long mass war.

2 - If there is I think the harm outweighs the good.

and finally and more directly 3 - I think they would indeed consider themselves as having won a victory by "forcing" our pullout, even if they suffer later losses after that. If we had outright lost in the Korean war, it wouldn't mean we would feel that WWII wasn't a victory for our side.

Re: "The war "hotting up" could fairly directly lead to them becoming stronger."

The day pigs are flying, Tim....

Conflict often strengthens the radicals at the expense of moderates.
