I suspect it will become a more important component for political and environmental reasons, and because it can be used for small scale production without the losses of efficiency some other methods would have (for example it doesn't make sense to try and build a small nuclear plant, at least with today's technology, future technology will allow smaller efficient plants, but not to the extent of solar power, not even close)
