I don't think either of us is really ignoring the outside world, but we could perhaps have talked more about it.

I think Buddy thinks that the radicals on the outside would also fight each other and somehow cancel each other out or exhaust each other to the point where they wouldn't be a problem or at least they would be much less of one, then they would lose credibility and moderate saner voices would take over.

I think that's a pretty wild idea myself.

While we were (if not very explicitly) dealing with forces around Iraq, your right that its not just Arabs and Persians that would be involved in someway. Israel, Turkey, and to an extent countries further afield would be effected or play a role.

Re: "it has neighbors with some very definite ideas about what should happen to the little nation."

(I think you'll find --- if you link back to my original posts on the subject --- that I specifically made reference to those factors. In fact, I'm counting on them.)

Re: "Right now, only the US forces in that little country are keeping things from boiling over."

Ah!... but what if 'coming to a full boil' is EXACTLY what is required to finally resolve matters? (And, my argument is that would be *beneficial* for long-term Western and US strategic goals.)
