Those old patterns have been defunct for decades now. No more unions. More effective Republican organization. And, perhaps most af all, an investor class that dwarfs any interest group since the farmers faded away. Incumbent protection, campaign finance "reform", and lack of term limits are the NEGATIVES that have helped destroy the old pattern-and I wish we could trade those in for volatile House elections again-regardless of who benefitted. But we are WAY short of any reform of incumbent protection, and we will have to live with the same sewer rats until we grow the guts to fix the system...
