I think maybe kids (at least many of them, not all of them) do get too much homework. The parents wind up "helping" a lot, and the helping can even amount to doing. OTOH I don't think they usually have assignments over the summer, and most of them don't go to summer school. Some academic type work during part of the summer might be good for them even if they don't like it. As for the post you responded to - I think its correct that schools discourage violence, OTOH I don't think that anyone involved in a fight should be automatically suspended. Self-defense and defense of others should count for something.
