Kerry said others had reported those events - Kerry did not say he had seen such events. There is the lie.

Kerry told the truth in 1971, as an young vet back from combat. The atrocities Kerry actually saw included free fire zone mowing down of civilians, burning hootches, dropping of Agent Orange over huge rural areas and carpet bombing, as well as the illegal war in Cambodia which included the CIA's infamous Phoenix Program. Also, everyone knows about the My Lai massacre.

Still most of Kerry's testimony was passing along accounts he'd heard from fellow vets, including Special Forces hunter-killer types.

The rightwing would like to pretend Phoenix never happened, but it did. And what was it? The CIA used Green Berets and SEALS and inserted them behind enemy lines. They would sneak into villages at night and assassinate village leaders in their sleep, often be-heading them as a terror method. Who picked out the targets? South Vietnamese intelligence agents, some of whom were corrupt and picked out victims for their own purposes. Some of the guys Kerry knew took part in Phoenix. Why the be-heaings? Because in the Buddhist religion, you can't get to Nirvana without a head. All true.
