We were in Playa del Carmen for my oldest son's wedding. My middle boy and I set off to explore the shops while the others were off doing their own thing. I did notice the police presence, armed with machine guns and told my son, we might ought to be prepared to leave quickly. He nodded in agreement and we had just turned the corner when boom, we were decended upon.

I had met the young lady only once, very briefly when they were dating. I have spoken to the young man many times over the last two years and was never told of her problems. When my son found out what happened the following morning, he told me of the problems she had. I just couldn't understand how she got so bad so quickly, he told me that his friend knew of her problems before they were married and thought they were under control. Obviously they aren't. Like I said, the only advise I offered was that he should call the bank and credit card companies first from the hotel, everything else could wait until he got back to the U.S. Other then that, I just was there for moral support. He talked, I listened. I haven't repeated anything he said to me to anyone else because I believe this was told to me in confidence and in a state of hurt, anger and denial. Denial being the biggest. I never once rolled my eyes, sighed or shook my head.

Here was a 29 year old man who was hurting and looked like the 5 year old I remembered him as the first time we met. He had fallen off his bike and broken his arm. He was dazed, hurt and alone. That morning, he looked like that same 5 year old. It just broke my heart.......but he isn't 5 any more and he just needed someone to talk to that wouldn't judge him.
