Republican. By Larry Eichel Inquirer Senior Writerphilly.com State records in Virginia indicate that a Republican lawyer from that state is behind a mysterious leaflet mailed to thousands of Pennsylvania homes last weekend. The leaflet was an apparent attempt to dissuade pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights voters from backing Democrat Bob Casey Jr. in the U.S. Senate race. It was made to look as if it came from a group sympathetic to such voters, and it left many recipients confused. The lawyer, Jason Torchinsky, has worked for the 2004 Bush-Cheney campaign, the Republican National Committee, the Bush White House and Department of Justice. On one side, the glossy, one-page mailer displays color photographs of Casey and Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) and proclaims: "On Gay Marriage, There's No Difference." The flip side notes that the two candidates also agree in their opposition to "a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion," embryonic stem-cell research and what were described as "common sense gun controls." The wording of the leaflet and the questions surrounding the listed sponsor - something called the Progressive Policy Council - led a lot of people, in the blogosphere and elsewhere, to think that the piece had Republican origins. According to the Virginia State Corporation Commission, Torchinsky is the sole organizer of the policy council. Torchinksy, who is now in private practice, did not return a phone call seeking comment. Contact senior writer Larry Eichel at 215-854-2415 or leichel@phillynews.com.
