While its true that a lot of the economy just plain died and daily living essentials went to the moon, I can't quite buy that it was the reason for gold not keeping up. Best guess is that it was a combination of factors - the day to day stresses that existed causing folk to produce much less due to fear, etc. being my #1 factor.
