I wish I knew, Allen. I even wish I had some good ideas. And I appreciate you saying that you don't know either -- too many critics are pretty irrational on that point. My theory, based on what I've read about most modern wars, is that no war is really "won" until the defeated populace is totally exhaused and resources depleted. If we'd taken Berlin in WWII without making the Germans so war-weary, we'd probably still be fighting isolated bands of Nazis. The same holds for other wars -- the winner doesn't really "win" until the entire country is just too tired to fight any more. But, I'm not advocating repressing the people of Iraq; just saying that I don't think we can win until they decide they've lost.

Thank God I am not in charge of the world, because I would have been much tougher on the people in Iraq who didn't want to get with the program. For starters, Saddam Hussein's trial would be over and he would be pushing daisies, along with every one of his henchmen. Now that we have invested so much in Iraq, it makes no sense to repeat our performance at the end of the Vietnam war. It would certify for all time that nobody should believe that the United States has the will to persevere when the going gets tough. Given that Iraq is a western construction in a tribal environment, we might kick some butt and partition the place. On this side of the ocean, I would investigate every one of those Imams who hasn't proven that he's on our side, and I would deport the ones who aren't. American citizens who actively work to destroy the country they are benefitting from should be dealt with as traitors. I repeat, I should not be in charge of the world. Now that I've taken a shot, what do you think we should do?
