He was warned that SO MUCH of our economy was dependent on defense spending that the economy would COLLAPSE if he had cut defense spending as much as was justified by the implosion of the Soviet Union.

Perhaps someone warned him of that, but if so very few people would be likely to take that message seriously. It is a rather ridiculous warning, but it does give you a convenient straw man to knock down.
