It traces the story of a violin (``the single most perfect acoustical machine I've ever seen,' says a restorer) from its maker in 17th century Italy to an auction room in modern Montreal. After 2 centuries of going from monastary , stolen by gypsies passed on to an eccentric English gentleman , the story later finds this perfect violin transported to communist China and surfaces in a pawn shop in Shanghai, where during the Cultural Revolution, it stands as a symbol of Western decadence. It's defended by a brave musician, who points out that Beethoven and Prokofiev were revolutionaries, but is saved only when this brave music lover risks her life to hide it from the cultural party enforcers . Isn't it ironic in this story & just the way of evolution vs revolution that eventually a new now-capitalist Chinese government emerges to send the vilolin off to Montreal to be auctioned , where it attracts the attention of the Samuel L. Jackson character....who discovers the truth of this one exquisite creation by the hand of man . What was considered only western decadence in its classical music form & instruments only decades earlier is now embraced and completely accepted , practiced all over and appreciated now in the PRC ? I expect fundamentalist Islam and all similar movements to be overwhelmed eventually by the innate beauty that exists in the world and to fade eventually too. We'll just say that the call of the "Muse" is greator than the call of a frozen Allah Frozen God & Koranic /Biblical interpretations ...and always was, and always will be . Le Violon Rouge .... a wonderful journey .imdb.com
