Will Sheffield's trade list matter?

newsday.com

November 6, 2006

<<...Gary Sheffield had tried his best to intimidate the Yankees into setting him free, but that didn't work. They announced yesterday that they have picked up his $13-million option for 2007.

Now Sheffield is trying a new tactic to determine his fate. His attorney, Rufus Williams, recently gave the Yankees a list of teams to which Sheffield would prefer to get traded.

But although the Yankees have every intention of dealing Sheffield, they likely will do so on their own terms -- to the team of their choosing, regardless of Sheffield's preferences.

...General manager Brian Cashman has told interested teams that the Yankees are in the market for a starting pitcher, bullpen help or a package of prospects.

The Yankees triggered the option because this way they can control Sheffield's destiny, keeping him from signing with Boston or another American League contender -- and they can acquire something in return for an attractive contract.

While sluggers such as Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee are in line for multi-million-dollar long-term contracts, Sheffield will cost a team only $13 million...>>
