Islam and slavery
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muhammad and those of his Companions who could afford it themselves owned slaves, and some of them acquired more by conquest.

Today, slavery continues in some Muslim nations, especially in Sudan and Mauritania, although there is mounting international pressure on these countries to abolish the institution.

Slavery was also percieved as a means of converting non-Muslims to Islam: A task of the masters was Religious instructions

Although slavery itself was not abolished by the Qur'an, Muslims were admonished to treat their slaves well: In the instance of illness, for example, it would be required for the slave to be looked after. [isn't that sweet?/sarcasm]
