When Grandpa was put in a camp in Canada in the 1st WW, his wife and children almost starved to death. They didn't take the Canadian born families of Germans just the men. So they were left in a cabin by a river for almost a year. They lived on roots and berries and fish from the river. Grandma was a deaf mute, to survive with 4 kids under 10 was a bit of real heroism with no assistance but a son who could trap rabbits and fish a bit. Of course we were never offered an apology.
