<<The stench must have been overwhelming.>>

If you add halitosis, very infrequent bathing to "Gardy Loo!" it could indeed be overwhelming. Then there is the famous letter from Napoleon to Josephine.....

The stench must have been overwhelming.

The Medieval French and English were looking right at the remains of the excellent water and sewer system that the Romans had built. And ignoring it. Makes you wonder.

First thing any country needs. Good water and sewer. Not one Muslim country has one. There is not one modern Muslim country in the world. Not even Turkey or Lebanon. They are all living under medieval conditions, one way or the other. And it's due to their religion. Nurture, not nature.
