I think my point is that this was not a stranger suddenly appearing among them, but someone who had been part of the organization for years. So a great deal of his social connections would have been where he had obviously spent a lot of time.

I tend to believe that if you grew up as a scout, they should have some idea of your character sometime before he got what, a hundred or so badges, and attained Scoutings highest level. OTOH now that scouting has made it position clear, I think in the next generation the problem may not occur because younger people are less accepting of this kind of discrimination, and will simply make a decision against joining scouting. The results of this kind of decision will show in the numbers of people who become scouts.
