I am not a Democrat; I am an independent. So I care more about the issues than petty party politics. That said, Liberman ran against his own party. If I were the party, I'd say that is grounds for stripping him of all his party seniority and privileges. Dems are under no obligation to offer any committee positions to an outsider.

Why do you say Liberman is the most powerful Democrat in the Senate? What is the source of his power? I understand that Liberman has spent a life time horse trading in that old boy club we call the Senate. So most likely you are right about him not suffering any reprisals for breaking rank. But on the principle of it, it is wrong for Dems to let him carry on as if he is still a party member. He did not run as a Democrat and should not be treated as one.
