SAN JOSE, Calif. — Nikon Corp.'s semiconductor-equipment unit beat its internal sales forecast for the first half of its fiscal year, but the operation fell slightly short of its shipment predication.
Nikon (Tokyo) also realized sales on two 193-nm immersion scanners in the first half of its fiscal year.

Overall, Nikon's chip-equipment unit posted sales of 135.9 billion yen ($1.15 billion) in the first half, up 19.7 percent from the like period a year ago. The unit's operating profits hit 23.3 billion yen ($197.6 million), up 10.9 percent from the like period a year ago.

Nikon had originally projected an operating profit of 14 billion yen ($118.7 million) on sales of 135 billion yen ($1.14 billion) for the unit.

In the first half, the unit sold 77 scanners for IC fabs. Included in the results were the sale of two 193-nm immersion machines. It also sold 46 tools for LCD fabs in the first half.

For the year, Nikon's IC-equipment unit is projected to have an operating profit of 45 billion yen ($381.6 million) on sales of 290 billion yen ($2.46 billion). It is projected to sell 170 scanners for IC fabs and 82 tools for LCD fabs.
