McCain has much more stature on his own right now without the huge deadweight of Bush's political baggage dragging him down. If I were him I wouldn't be seen anywhere near the White House unless it was a closed circuit broadcast to the Republican faithful.

McCain's task now is to stake out his own direction and identity. The party has figured out that Bush-Rove-Cheney is a dead end street; McCain is their most electable alternative. He can call a lot of the shots now. As Veep, he would be in the shadow of GWB all the time.

Gates is an uninspired choice for SecDef. Bush should have offered it to Lieberman and left the door open to a new Senate election there. Maybe he did, who knows.
