Only the most strident republican loyalists could not understand why the electorate did what they did. Well, now its time for some bridges across troubled waters. Let's govern. The House in January should pass a new federal minimum wage law...and the President should gladly sign it. Many individual states, including all the industrial ones, have already taken the sting out of this one by raising their own minimum wages well above the new proposed federal level. The minimum wage is a big deal for the democrats and something many republicans don't oppose. The congress should pass it and GWB should sign it in a Rose Garden ceremony. Then, having made a good faith move on a democratic priority the President should reintroduce his guest worker/immigration program to the congress, with some tweaks to better reflect the growing concern about illegals and some stronger enforcement measures for violators. The Congress should address the President's plan SERIOUSLY and try to find common ground on the issue. Both parties have much to gain here with any kind of deal. yes, both wings of the respective parties will howl....the conservatives because it has guest workers with a "path to citizenship" and the liberals for the draconian penalties for violators and long period required to eventually gain citizenship....but most Americans will cheer this deal. If, if, it provides border security as part of the package. Third..Iraq. Now that Rumsfeld has stepped aside the Iraq Study Group's report and recommendations can be looked at with new eyes and less baggage. Put John Murtha (still so respected by the military) out there with John Warner, the new defense secretary and others....and work toward some bi-partisan stances on how we begin to disengage. Listen to the generals...and work toward maintaining support for the Iraq government while not getting ourselves in the middle of a civil war...It can be done! Fourth....everybody recommit to the non-Iraq elements of the war on terror. Nancy Pelosi needs to put out a contract on Osama Bin Laden....and mean it. Frankly, that woman is scary looking and if she put a contract out on me, I'd stay in my cave. Hey, the board is a little testy today. Its to be expected. Gloating and whining haven't been too bad, though. Tomorrow is a new day. Let's see if we can make it work. If we can, those red and blue guys and gals can too.
