These things all run in cycles. Remember how 1979 seemed like the end of the world, then the late 1990's turned it all around for a while. I don't think forecasting over long horizons is worth much, even though I acknowledge the many structural problems we face now. I like Hagel too. In a more measured, dignified system we would get a Hagel-Richardson 2008 presidential race and have something to listen to in the debates. But we will probably get McCain-Clinton or Obama and more of the usual theatrics. At least if Rove is not involved, maybe we can skip the snide character attacks and useless pissing on the other guy's patriotism, loyalty, values, etc. If nothing else, this vote proved that the old tired cliches are getting very stale and smelly.
