Hola marcos:

<<...invading countries seems to have gone out of fashion for the moment...>>

Gracias a Dios. Last time I was in Nicaragua, Rumsfeld was visiting, and it wasn't too difficult to imagine what he was doing there only 6 months before the election. Nasty bit of work...

<<...maybe a bit of hope toward real international cooperation, even [i'm watching Bush say 'I'm the decider' as i type this, lol] ... Rumsfeld canned and a daddy-Bush man in his place>>

Vamos a ver... I'm delighted to see Rumsfeld gone, but I don't have a lot of faith in the ability of the USA to step back and accept the results of a democratic election in Latin America. Will it be different this time? <g> I hope so.

I'm going down to Nica again in January and really looking forward to seeing what's going on.

Best regards,
Howy

The degree of influence that Iran has over Iraqi Shiites is very unclear. Sure they share the same flavour of Islam, but the Iraqis are Arabs and the Iranians are not. And there is that little matter of a recent war between the two countries.

I was against the invasion, of course, and was saying two years ago that the best strategy for the US was to just leave. That still looks like the best thing to do, but it is only the best of a set of very bad options. All bets are off for the future of Iraq.
