"He accomplished more change in modernizing our armed forces than any previous SecDef."

I lauded him for it at the time. However, I thought, and still think, he should have tried harder to get the military leadership to buy into it instead of issuing orders from on high.

Well, in all the recrimination to come, we can say one good thing about Rummy. He accomplished more change in modernizing our armed forces than any previous SecDef. He shook up the Pentagon, reorganized a stodgy armed forces to make them more useful in the modern world where we need rapid reaction special forces. So he did some good.

Sorry, but that couldn't be more wrong. This fellow came to the Pentagon to make a name for himself by experimenting with a deadly war. His autocratic approach has done tremendous damage to the culture of the military and he is single handedly the most responsible for the mess in Iraq today. I can tell you authoritatively that the military brass is breathing a sigh of relief today. Hopefully his replacement is a more inclusive fellow.

"I don't want anyone to start thinking that this war with the Islamic fanatics is over. It's far from over."

I do, because it was never a "war" to begin with. Any more than the "war on drugs" is a war. A war is something you fight against another country, that has a military and is fighting your military. Korea, at the time, wasn't even called a "war". It was a "police action". We need to take back the word "war", which has been co-opted by politicians for fear-mongering.

The military hammer DOESN'T WORK against this problem, wasn't DESIGNED to defeat this problem, and in fact, only recruits members for the terrorists and CREATES more problems than it solves. It can have a spot use role, but it should be quick, and ended quickly at the direction of intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

No doubt Rummie was a good organizer and did some great work - at home. But unfortunately he also proved that running a war is something for the military and not home turf for bureaucrats.
