You misunderstood my first sentence, I think. I agreed that it would take a long time to change our dependency on oil.

Whether we agree or not, a good deal of the world views us as acting unilaterally for our own interest. Many view us as the greatest threat to world peace. When did all this take place? Since 9/11.

We view 9/11 as a pivotal moment in recent history for a lot of reasons - loss of innocence, reaffirmation of national identity, ushering in of a new era of stateless threats. The rest of the world views it in a different way, as the day that the US started becoming a bully.

When Bush 41 declared Saddam and his real WMD programs a threat, he steadily built both international consensus and coalition to meet the threat. Bush 43, determined to show our 'new' strength, did neither, and landed us in a unilateral mess.
