Well hard core leftists on one end, and Republicans taking their seats in previous elections on the other end.

They "blue dogs" made a comeback in this election because the Republicans aren't very popular right now, but the hard core leftists also aren't liked in many of the states and districts the Dems picked up. VA statewide? NC 11th district? etc. Your not going to get Ted Kennedy or Charlie Rangel clones elected in such places.

I don't think its really a rightward shift. The blue dogs are to the right of most Dems but often not to the right of the outgoing Republicans. I do agree that its not a large leftward shift.
