I don't think that a Democratic tax increase (which is what you get by "blocking renewal" of the tax cuts), would inevitably tank the economy. Sure its a negative for the economy, but its possible that the economy might be healthy enough not to tank. Also unless it tanks quickly and decisively, the Democrats might not get the blame for it. Even if it does tank so decisively the Democrats will still try to put the blame on Bush.
