I don't want to speak for Gem (I'd do a poor job, he's got more upstairs than I do), but I believe a portion of his point is to show how religion can have as much of a negative impact on society as a positive one.

As far as Christian history, I've used the same argument. Portions of Islam are today being hijacked by extremists for their own evil secular purposes much in the same way that Christianity was hijacked for centuries. Therefore, those who claim that there is something inherently evil about Islam, based on these current events, are ignoring Christian history (else admitting that there is also something inherently evil about Christianity).
