Because they didn't fully trust popular Democracy (the lessons of the French Revolution were still very fresh in their memories then).

They ALSO nearly approved an American King.

Fortunately, Democracy has matured, and the Rights of Man have advanced in the past 200 years or so.

Land owners were considered to be more likely to take the time to learn about the issues and politicians. I would bet that as a percentage of voters they were better informed by far than current ones are.
