I think it would be disgraceful but if one reads further in the link you gave these are some of the findings: She doesn't just want to appoint Hastings to appease the CBC, she also wants to punish the Senior Dem on the committee ans presumptive chair, fellow Californian Jane Harman, for being too accommodating of the Bush administration (thus throwing a bone to the ravening lefties) Signs indicate she may be looking for an alternative. To some degree, the WaPo, The LA Times and the NYT have all been critical of the Hastings choice. In the NYT piece, Pelosi indicates that she may be searching for a way out. "Representative Silvestre Reyes. Democrat of Texas and also a committee member, has emerged as a possible compromise candidate. But Ms. Pelosi has also told colleagues that she could select someone who is not currently on the committee. Appearing Wednesday on CNN, Ms. Pelosi said that it was her prerogative to select an entirely new Intelligence Committee at the beginning of each Congress, and that it is the one committee on which seniority rules are not recognized." I would guess she is eager to be seen as a leader, not just as a fighter, at this point. On the other hand, she may feel she can't ignore the CBC, since after all, racial preferences are a Dem core value. How she comes down on this will certainly be illuminating. I trust Pelosi to make the right decision and that means no Hastings.. Let's hope anyway... Corruption and ineptitude are not welcome on either side of the aisle.... 11/10/2006 6:09
