A particularly strong good riddance to Pombo

The election results were overwhelmingly positive. So many creeps were swept out. But one in particular deserves special notice.

Richard Pombo is from California's 11th congressional district, in the San Joaquin Valley. He has got to be one of the most vile soon-to-be ex-members of Congress. Pombo is a far right-wing, environment-hating freak. Key objectives during his now-ended term: overturn the endangered species act; allow commercial whaling; sell public lands to mining, energy and logging companies; allow drilling just about everywhere (arctic, offshore, etc.); gutting of environmental protections; allow banned toxic pesticides and chemicals. You get the picture. Add to this scandal and a terrible voting record on social issues and you've got one fucked up congressman.

Pombo was in charge of the House Resources Committee. He used his position to help pass legislation to defile the environment and help corporations in every way possible. Pombo was named the number one hater of wildlife by Defenders of Wildlife. TruthOut called him The Darth Vader of the Environment. Defenders called Pombo's defeat "the most significant electoral victory for the environmental movement in decades."

Besides the doom he has sought to bring on the environment, he was also one corrupt SOB. He was closely associated with Jack Abramoff and Tom DeLay and called one of the most tainted members of Congress by Citizens for Responsibilities and Ethics in Washington. The DCCC calls him "dirty Dick" and cites that he took family vacations with taxpayer dollars as one of many ethical violations he's committed.

Bushies pledged allegiance to Enron, Exxon and Halliburton, plus Rove dirty politics. Their allegiance had nothing to do with God or America.

Fundamentally, America is two things, our democracy and our Constitution. Those are the only two things which separate us from the Phillipines or Mexico as a government. So those are the things we should be pledging allegiance to. We should definitely not be pledging allegiance to any politicians, and only soldiers need pledge to obey the president, so long as there are checks and balances to make sure that president doesn't do anything nutty like Bush did in Iraq.

God is too amorphous a concept to be universally pledged to. Religion is a private matter which should be kept out of politics and government as much as possible. We have freedom of religon in this country which also means freedom to worship your dog if you want to. And pledging allegiance to Bush's foreign policy or something is just stupid.
