Retired military officers have come out with these characterizations of how Rumsfeld was viewed. Of course, current serving military officers are not going to go on record with that sort of criticism; it would be career suicide. There are no 'whistle blower' laws protecting military officers. But, multiple sources in the media, including the publisher of the military Times papers, have reported that current serving high echelon military officers wanted Rumsfeld out.

Bush has brought this upon himself, by stubbornly sticking by Rummie even when it was obvious, by the lack of results, that Rummie was not up for the job. And when Bush kept insisting that he'd given the generals everything they needed, it must have caused a lot of hard feelings in the serving military leadership. They clamoured for their highest priority: Fire Don Rumsfeld.

And Bush finally listened.
