I added to my chart the outlay side. What is striking is that both parties increase spending at very similar speed.

However, what the debt chart makes obvious is that the Republicans, at least over the past forty plus years, ignored a significant ingredient of responsible management:

The income side.

It seems to me that the label "tax and spend" for the Democrats is quite accurate. However, to be fair and in contrast to all the rhetoric, one would have to then label the Republicans the "spend and spend" party!

I have always preferred solid management and spending in excess of income has never appealed to me.
